Could Governor Mark Sanford get his wish this Christmas for tax reform?
On December 9, 2008 Governor Mark Sanford announced his plan for tax reform for South Carolina in hopes of bringing more business and jobs to the Upstate. His plan has three different parts to it and is still up for debate if this thing will be good for us all.
One part would possibly cut taxes by 50 percent and off setting it with a $.30 tax hike per pack of cigarettes. This one I have a real problem with. It is not fair to make one specific group of people make up for this loss in tax revenue. They have tried to pass a cigarette tax like this before and was unable to do so.
As far as the whole plan goes, it looks to bring our economy back from the brink, with the exception of the cigarette tax , which I do not agree with. Corporations and individuals alike would benefit from this plan, so it is not tailored to just the companies. Personally I would like to see more previsions in this and all tax plans for the corporate world, that in order to receive these cuts, they must not outsource jobs outside of the US.
