Alright, I am now on my soap box. It seems to me that there is a witch hunt going on here in South Carolina over Governor Mark Sanford not wanting to take the Federal stimulus money without being allowed to pay down some debt.
First off I have to say that I am not a Republican nor am I a Democrat. My views simply are logic and trust in what is right and not go with party affiliations. Most people who know me understand that I do not always agree with our Governor but this is one issue that I do.
The problem here is that the local media I have seen on TV would have you to believe that he wants to use the entire stimulus to pay down debt and worst take away from the school system. They simply are not giving the whole story. See for yourself just what Governor Mark Sanford would like to do with the stimulus.
He is simply asking for a quarter of that money to pay down debt which would in turn free up even more than the bailout would to begin with. Did I miss something here? Have all of the economic professionals said to pay down debt first in your personal lives to get your money back on track to the right direction?
As everyone from South Carolina knows that Mark Sanford has asked to pay down debt with the stimulus instead of what is outlined in the stipulations from the Federal Government. This has been reported on often in the local news. Both sides on this issue make sense to some points. A comment that I received today promoted me to write about this very subject.
I have asked myself over and over again why he would refuse help in this time of need. Given the fact that our state has the second highest unemployment rate in the nation at 10.4%, I would think that this money could in some way help create needed jobs but who knows for sure. Could this money really help the average person like you and me? With all the bailouts that have been sent through thus far I have to question if we would ever see the benefits.
Will it help to pay down debt? I am no financial adviser but I do hear them say very often to individuals with debt that the first step to independence is to pay down debt. With that said, if he does not take the money, will we still have to help pay it back? Well according to Governor Mark Sanford’s website , he is asking to use just one quarter of the stimulus money to pay down debt. It would still leave $2.1 Billion.
No matter what side you are on here, I still have to wonder if this will make much of a difference. Sceptisism has now set in my way of thinking because nothing they have tried as of yet has worked. Will Governor Mark Sanford get his way with the stimulus? The jury is still out on that one.
In this world we live in woman are made to pay for things like exams in order to prosecute the criminals. South Carolina may be passing S512 that would prevent a victim from bearing the cost of such things. Making a woman pay to prove that someone has attached her is just ludicrous. This is one reason that woman do not file a complaint a lot of the time because of fear that they will have to pay to do so. Common sense is a normal way of life for me. Our Government needs to get back to the people with common sense instead of those who live for the almighty dollar.
You guys probably remember a post I did a few days ago about the cigarette tax hike which caused cartons to go up about $7 each. Well I found out this week through talking with Governor Mark Sanford’s office that there has been no tax increases on the local level. The only tax increase going into effect is the Federal that calls for an additional .63 cent per pack. It was told to me that our South Carolina Governor does not plan on passing any of the tax increase bills in the house and senate that deals with increasing taxes on tobacco. At least someone is trying to cut us some slack in this horrible economic time.
